Fire of railway tank cars in the Přerov area. A special alert level has been declared.
© HZS Olomouckého kraje Today, a serious railway accident occurred in the Czech part of Moravia, approximately 50 km from the Polish border. A freight train carrying benzol derailed near the village of Hustopeče nad Bečvou in the Přerov district, leading to the release of this flammable and toxic substance.
The incident sparked a massive fire, with flames reaching heights of up to 20 meters. At least five train cars were engulfed due to a benzene leak. Dense black smoke filled the air above the site, evoking a scene from an apocalyptic film.
Firefighters from three regions were called in, and a special fire hazard level was declared. A chemical laboratory was also dispatched to the scene to assess the situation, while aerial firefighting using a helicopter was underway.
Local residents were advised not to ventilate or open their windows, as the train station is located just 500 meters from the residential area. Despite the severity of the situation, the governor stated that no one was injured in the incident.
Benzene is a transparent, hazardous liquid produced during the carbonization of coal. It is composed of benzene, toluene, xylenes, and other compounds. In the past, it was used as part of fuel mixtures for combustion engines.
