Part 1: Corruption at the End of the World – A Gift from God
© Koláž AKTU.cz The AKTU.cz editorial team has been mapping corrupt practices in Boží Dar for several months. Based on the information available, it is clear that not only is Boží Dar’s mayor, Jan Horník, abusing his official powers, but there are also violations of the law in the management of foreign property. More in Jiří Forman’s video report.
Boží Dar is literally a paradise for skiers. Besides a few slopes, there isn’t the kind of flood of tourists and skiers here as, for example, in the Krkonoše mountains. Jan Horník has been the town’s mayor for several years. He even seems to be acting on behalf of the town in favor of local entrepreneur Anton Jurica, aided by the town council.
The lands leased by Boží Dar are used by Jurica under ridiculously low rental fees, sometimes even for free. Jurica himself has built ski resorts on these parcels where he earns hundreds of thousands each month. In some cases, he uses the land free of charge.
The town of Boží Dar lacks any official record showing that Jurica is using certain parcels, so it is likely that these lands are being used unofficially. And once again, Jurica profits from them—either by running a tow lift or a ski slope on these grounds.
Horník himself claims that everything is more or less in order, including the fact that he lives in Jurica’s house. To him, it doesn’t seem like a conflict of interest at all.
The AKTU.cz editorial team has filed a criminal complaint against Horník and the town council because we believe that criminal activity is taking place—not only regarding the management of Boží Dar’s assets but also involving large sums of money that the state is completely unaware of. A significant amount of money isn’t accounted for in line with standard business practices, and it appears that the Club of the Krušné Mountains may also be misusing subsidies. The funds intended for building a snowboard park may have ended up being spent on ski slopes run by someone entirely different from the person who signed the contract with Boží Dar.
